The Infectious Disease Interest Group has invited Dr. Bernard JC (Beej) Macatangay, MD to campus to speak about his research and tireless fight against HIV/AIDS and We have invited Dr. Andrea Pallotta, PharmD to speak on her leadership role at Cleveland Clinic impacts HIV/AIDS patients and why a specialized pharmacist is so impactful for this vulnerable population. Please join us on campus to share conversation, build community, and break the stigma around HIV/AIDS. We hope to raise money to benefit the UNAIDS Program and help global AIDS research.

Dr. Macatangay joined the ID Division in 2010 at the rank of Instructor of Medicine. He has served as the Associate Director of the Pittsburgh Immunology Specialty Lab of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) for over 10 years and as the Clinical Laboratory Director of the Pitt Clinical Research Site for over 7 years. Dr. Macatangay was appointed Associate Program Director for Basic and Translational Research with the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program, and, Director of Student and Resident Infectious Diseases Research in 2019.



Dr. Macatangay also rounds on the General Infectious Diseases Service. His laboratory research focuses on HIV-associated inflammation and on immunotherapeutic strategies for achieving sustained HIV remission off antiretroviral therapy. Specifically, the overall goal of Dr. Macatangay’s research is to further define the role of immunoregulatory pathways in HIV-associated inflammation and HIV persistence in order to design successful immunotherapeutic strategies to decrease chronic inflammation and address important knowledge gaps in HIV cure research. In addition, the Macatangay Lab serves as the specimen processing lab for the University of Pittsburgh Clinical Research Site.



Dr. Macatangay has a strong record of achievement as a clinical and translational investigator, dedicated clinician, and educator. His accomplishments have enhanced the research, educational, and clinical care missions of the Infectious Diseases Division, the Department of Medicine, and the School of Medicine.

Dr. Pallotta is an Consultant at the Wolters Kluwer Health (Lexi-Comp). She is also a Clinical Coordinator, Infectious Diseases and HIV at Cleveland Clinic. She completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Toledo.
