Founded in 1902, Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) is a medical honor society dedicated to the belief that we can improve care for all by recognizing high educational achievement, honoring gifted teaching, encouraging the development of leaders in academia and the community, supporting the ideals of humanism, and promoting service to others. Election to Alpha Omega Alpha signifies a lasting commitment to scholarship, leadership, professionalism, and service. Membership in the society confers recognition of someone’s dedication to the profession and art of healing. NEOMED’s Zeta chapter of AOA was founded in 1982 and is proud to induct new medical students, residents, alumni, and faculty into the chapter each year.

ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDENT NOMINATION
For medical students, those with scholastic qualifications that place them in the upper 25% of the class are eligible for AOA nomination. Per AOA requirements, each AOA chapter may select up to 20% of its graduating class for AOA selection. Scholastic achievement is the primary but not the sole basis for nomination. Other considerations include a candidate’s track record of leadership, ethical standards, professionalism, service, scholarly work and potential for achievement in medicine. Any candidate with a record of professionalism offense may be removed from consideration for AOA by the selection committee and/or the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.

The NEOMED American Academy of Family Physicians-Family Medicine Interest Group (AAFP-FMIG) is committed to increasing interest in Family Medicine, its sub-specialties, and any associated procedures while guiding those who are interested toward pursuing a career in family medicine. The mission of the Geriatrics Interest Group is to show medical students about the opportunities and diverse experiences one can have as a geriatrician. Physicians specializing in geriatrics are needed more than ever due to the large amount of baby boomers retiring and reaching 65 years or older. There is currently a large shortage of geriatric physicians, especially in rural areas. We want to foster interest and a better understanding of geriatric medicine's role in the health care community.

Members will have many opportunities to network with geriatric physicians who have a internal medicine or family medicine back ground. Members will get to see how geriatrics influences both internal medicine, family medicine, and the health care field overall. Members can also participate in volunteering events with senior citizens and build strong bonds with the elderly care community.

NEOMED College Affiliation: College of Medicine The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is a national, student-run organization open to physicians-in-training. This organization lobbies for many student concerns and has made landmarks in healthcare, such as playing a role in reducing the resident's work week and contributing to the PharmFree movement. We strive for quality, affordable care for all, global health equity, diversity in medicine, and professionalism. The NEOMED chapter aims to promote these goals, provide opportunities for members to be leaders, and improve the lives of medical students. The Dermatology Interest Group at NEOMED was formed to introduce our student body to the field of dermatology and provide the general population information about skin, hair, and nail health. Our aim is to improve visual skills for all areas of clinical medicine, to increase the skills of medical students interested in all specialties at diagnosing and treating skin disease, to increase awareness of systemic racism by understanding skin color as it affects the patient personally and the practice of medicine as well as improving diagnosis of skin conditions in patients with skin of color, and to spread messages of positive body image in our students and local communities.
