Mission
Writing Whales is an interdisciplinary, faculty-supported student group that fosters writing confidence among NEOMED students. This group provides a relaxed and welcoming space where students can develop their writing skills with support from peers and faculty. Through informal discussions, structured peer support, and mentorship, we aim to empower students in grant writing, research posters, and academic publishing in a stress-free environment.

Membership Benefits
Short-Term Objectives:
1. The rising number of M2s conducting research through the summer research fellowship program feel motivated to publish their research outcomes with the support of Writing Whales.
2. Writing Whales would encourage students who cannot or do not want to write up their research in the form of a publication to write up narratives of their experiential learning opportunity. The goal of this writing is not solely their research but also based on their experience.

Long-Term Objectives:
3. To create a comfortable and collaborative environment where students across disciplines (M.D., Pharm.D., D.D.S., Ph.D., and M.S. programs) can enhance their writing skills without fear of judgment.
4. To provide structured yet low-pressure support for students working on grants, research manuscripts, abstracts, and conference posters.
5. To integrate into NEOMED’s Research and Scholarship badge program, helping students earn recognition for their academic writing efforts while keeping the process enjoyable and approachable.
6. To foster confidence in written communication, an essential skill for future healthcare professionals and researchers, by providing a safe space for growth.
7. To establish faculty mentorship opportunities where students feel comfortable seeking guidance on their writing projects.

Meeting Structure:
• Frequency: Weekly meetings in a relaxed setting within the NEOMED Library.
• Format: The structure will remain flexible and evolve based on student needs, allowing for a mix of casual writing sessions, peer discussions, and faculty guidance.
• Themes: Topics may include grant writing, poster presentations, manuscript development, and publication strategies, with an emphasis on supportive learning rather than high-pressure deadlines. Faculty-led workshops may be offered to focus on growth, skill-building, and creating a positive writing experience.
• Mentorship: Faculty members will provide feedback in a constructive and encouraging manner, helping students build confidence in their writing.
• Practice & Feedback: Students can share their drafts at their own pace and receive feedback in an open, supportive, and friendly setting.

Integration with the Research and Scholarship Badge Program:
• Students who actively participate will be able to earn recognition toward their Research and Scholarship badge while enjoying the writing process.
• Sessions will align with the competencies required for scholarly work at NEOMED in an inclusive and supportive atmosphere.
• Faculty-led workshops will focus on growth, skill-building, and creating a positive writing experience.

Expected Outcomes:
1. Increased confidence and competency in academic writing among NEOMED students in a stress-free environment.
2. Higher participation in grant applications, conference presentations, and manuscript submissions with a positive mindset.
3. Strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration through shared writing goals and an inviting community.
