Founded in 1902, Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) is a medical honor society dedicated to the belief that we can improve care for all by recognizing high educational achievement, honoring gifted teaching, encouraging the development of leaders in academia and the community, supporting the ideals of humanism, and promoting service to others. Election to Alpha Omega Alpha signifies a lasting commitment to scholarship, leadership, professionalism, and service. Membership in the society confers recognition of someone’s dedication to the profession and art of healing. NEOMED’s Zeta chapter of AOA was founded in 1982 and is proud to induct new medical students, residents, alumni, and faculty into the chapter each year.

ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDENT NOMINATION
For medical students, those with scholastic qualifications that place them in the upper 25% of the class are eligible for AOA nomination. Per AOA requirements, each AOA chapter may select up to 20% of its graduating class for AOA selection. Scholastic achievement is the primary but not the sole basis for nomination. Other considerations include a candidate’s track record of leadership, ethical standards, professionalism, service, scholarly work and potential for achievement in medicine. Any candidate with a record of professionalism offense may be removed from consideration for AOA by the selection committee and/or the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.

The mission of the Geriatrics Interest Group is to show medical students about the opportunities and diverse experiences one can have as a geriatrician. Physicians specializing in geriatrics are needed more than ever due to the large amount of baby boomers retiring and reaching 65 years or older. There is currently a large shortage of geriatric physicians, especially in rural areas. We want to foster interest and a better understanding of geriatric medicine's role in the health care community.

The NEOMED COM has adopted a badging program to recognize distinction among medical students who choose to acquire extracurricular specialized knowledge and skills during their time at NEOMED. These badges are a quantifiable mark of distinction in the context of a designated learning community. Learning communities are broadly defined as: "intentionally developed longitudinal groups of faculty and students that aim to enhance students’ medical school experience and maximize learning" (Ferguson et al, 2009).
The NEOMED COM Learning Communities are intentionally designed programs that contain opportunities to attain badges for students’ longitudinal, progressive and sustained engagement. Alternatively, students may explore several badges if they are unsure whether to commit to a longitudinal path toward greater distinction. We are prioritizing inclusivity and exploration to ensure any student at any stage in their personal and professional life can engage at any time. As more Learning Communities are added, we hope students will gravitate to communities as a means to personalize their own educational experience in the College of Medicine.

The HEAL learning communities will have concentrations in rural medicine, social justice, and urban practice. 2. Oak Badge for Medical Humanism
The Oak Badge for Medical Humanism recognizes students who demonstrate compassion, empathy, and patient-centered care. This progressive badge allows students to earn points through various activities, both internal and external, fostering skill, knowledge, and engagement. As the program evolves, additional activities will offer opportunities for students to deepen their commitment to humanism in medicine and develop holistic patient care approaches.

3. In the works - Research and Scholarship
The Research and Scholarship learning community will help students distinguish themselves amongst their peers. The qualities of critical thinking and problem solving, which are engrained in research, will promote the attitude of life-long learning in physicians, and in turn, better serve patients. The overarching goal of the badging program is to instill the process of critical thinking and reinforcement of the pathophysiological basis of disease in the student participants. We believe this will lead to one’s success in any M.D. career path. Critical thinking is a foundational process that will enable better decisions in patient care or in research (clinical or basic) and the application of basic knowledge to the patient is important for medical care.

The Professional Development Advising Team (PDAT) program began in 1995 and has assisted medical students with continuity in advising, support and retention from the first year of medical school until graduation.

The PDAT program assists students in adjusting to the many pressures and stresses of medical education within a small group context. Peer Advisors provide a formal forum for first-year students to interact with a second-year student who can serve as a resource person to provide an opportunity for guidance and support, assist students in finding appropriate campus resources and model professional behavior. Peer Advisors may also informally assist students in subsequent years with adjustments to clinical experiences and clerkships.

PDAT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEES

The PDAT program has incorporated five student led executive committees, made up of student chairs and committee members. Each committee is charged with a responsibility to better assist and support students throughout all four years of their medical education.

Events/Planning Committee: Recommend and plan peer advisor events; determine meeting format, mandatory or optional and frequency.

Social Media Committee: Push content out to the students through the NEOMED Peer Advisor Instagram account (@neomedcompdat); features, student spotlights, resources, and assign regular student contributors.

Outreach Committee: Create a recommended peer advisor communication plan; determine an efficient way to communicate with other Peer Advisors and advisees in between meetings.

Program Evaluation Committee: Create mid and end of the year peer advisor program evaluations to assess program effectiveness and determine recommendations for improvement.

Resource Committee: Compile common peer advisor resources and recommend a platform for sharing.

SESSIONS AND LUNCHES

Second-year Peer Advisors are required to host three peer advisor lunches throughout the academic year to "check in" with their first-year advisees. These lunches occur in the fall, winter and spring and serve as a platform for Peer Advisors to answer questions and offer advice to their advisees in the areas of study planning, exam preparation, time management, balancing extra-curricular activities, maintaining personal wellness, etc.

Third-year Peer Advisors also host advising sessions throughout the year. These sessions offer second-year students the opportunity to meet with third-year Peer Advisors to gather advice on study habits for M2 year including Step 1 preparation and what to expect during third year clerkships.

Stop the Bleed (STB) is a national effort developed by the American College of Surgeons and the United States Military as a way to address the national incidents involving mass casualties. Many of the deaths related to these incidents, as in the Las Vegas shooting and the Boston Marathon Bombing resulted from bleeding that could have been prevented if more people were trained to stop bleeding. STB has joined with the Stop the Bleed Committee at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth's Youngstown Hospital as a way to bring these coordinated efforts to Northeast Ohio. Once going through the training process, anyone can sign up to help train at future events. Welcome to Students for a National Health Program, the student arm of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP). PNHP is a single-issue organization advocating a universal, comprehensive single-payer national health program with more than 23,000 members and around 100 chapters nation-wide. We believe that a single publicly funded, privately delivered universal health care system is necessary for us to provide high quality care to all our patients.

Despite spending more than twice as much as the rest of the industrialized nations, the United States performs poorly in comparison on major health indicators such as life expectancy, infant mortality, and immunization.

Moreover, the U.S. leaves 33 million people completely uninsured and millions more inadequately covered. Single-payer financing would save, on paper, more than $400 billion per year – enough to provide comprehensive coverage to everyone without paying any more than we already do.

While the Affordable Care Act will expand Medicaid and mandate the purchase of private insurance, it will still leave nearly 25 million people uninsured. It also has no concrete way to curb skyrocketing health care and administrative costs associated with a for-profit private health insurance industry. We can see a single-payer system in our lifetime and the time to act is now.

• Frequency: Weekly meetings in a relaxed setting within the NEOMED Library.

• Themes: Topics may include grant writing, poster presentations, manuscript development, and publication strategies, with an emphasis on supportive learning rather than high-pressure deadlines.
